Nifty
opens below 12K, Sensex falls 300 pts; Yes Bank gains 3%
Market
Opens: It is weak start for the Indian indices on
January 8 with Nifty below 12,000 mark on the back of escalation of
geopolitical tension and on projection of economy growth of 5 percent for
2019-20.
At 09:16 hrs IST, the Sensex is down
315.68 points or 0.77% at 40553.79, and the Nifty down 100.20 points or 0.83%
at 11952.80. About 147 shares have advanced, 577 shares declined, and 24 shares
are unchanged.
BPCL, SBI, Vedanta, Hindalco, L&T,
Tata Motors, UPL, Coal India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank are among major losers on
the Indices, while gainers are Yes Bank and Bharti Airtel.
Rupee
Opens: The Indian rupee opened lower by 19 paise at
72.02 per dollar on Wednesday versus previous close 71.83.
Gold
Update: Gold prices surged more than 2% on
Wednesday, crossing the key USD 1,600 mark, as investors sought cover in the
safe-haven metal after Iran fired rockets at Iraqi airbase which hosts US
forces.
