Nifty starts Jan F&O series flat, Sensex firm; Maruti, Axis gain

The market has kick-started January Futures and Options (F&O) series on a flat note. The Sensex is up 54.61 points or 0.2 percent at 26420.76 and the Nifty is up 16.05 points or 0.2 percent at 8119.65.

About 215 shares have advanced, 50 shares declined, and 19 shares are unchanged. Investors will be keenly watching for any government announcement as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 50-day demonetisation deadline draws to a close today. 

Cipla, ONGC, Maruti, Axis Bank and Asian Paints are top gainers while HDFC, Wipro, Bharti Airtel, Infosys and Reliance are losers in the Sensex.

The Indian rupee gained in the early trade. It has opened higher by 15 paise at 67.95 per dollar versus 68.10 Thursday.

Nifty Bank snaps 3-day losing streak, Sensex gains 406 pts

The market has ended with strong gains. All sectoral indices close with gains  of over 1 percent as FMCG, metals lead the chart.

The Sensex was up 406.34 points or 1.6 percent at 26213.44, and the Nifty up 124.60 points or 1.6 percent at 8032.85.

About 1679 shares advanced, 862 shares declined, and 193 shares were unchanged. 

The Nifty Bank snapped 3-day losing streak, closed with gains of over 1.2 percent.

Nifty opens above 7900, Sensex firm; Tata Steel, ITC, Cipla up

The Sensex is up 71.46 points or 0.3 percent at 25878.56, and the Nifty up 18.15 points or 0.2 percent at 7926.40.

About 404 shares have advanced, 263 shares declined, and 27 shares are unchanged. Tata Steel, ITC, Cipla, Adani Ports and ONGC are gainers while Hero MotoCorp, Axis Bank, Wipro, M&M and Dr Reddy's Labs are losers in the Sensex.

The Indian rupee slipped in the early trade on Tuesday. It has opened lower by 10 paise at 67.84 per dollar versus 67.74 Monday.

Nifty back above 7900 amid pressure; Bank sheds 1%, Maruti soars

The Nifty today broke its Brexit day low of 7950. Demonetisation is expected to have an extended impact on the market and December quarter earnings will be low. Also, the US President-elect Donald Trump will take charge on January 20, which is adding to market’s worry. 

The 30-share BSE Sensex was down 208.20 points at 25832.50 and the 50-share NSE Nifty fell 66.90 points to 7918.85. The broader markets underperformed benchmarks with the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices shedding over 1.3 percent on weak breadth.

ICICI Bank, HDFC, HDFC Bank, Tata Motors, Axis Bank and SBI were down 1-2 percent while Maruti Suzuki, Asian Paints and Dr Reddy's Labs outperformed, rising 0.5-1 percent.

The market earnings multiple has increased to 15.54x vs 15.34x a month ago, the market is trading at a 9.3 percent discount to its five-year average
